We want to better understand your thoughts about Australia Day and other civic events.
Council acknowledges that there is differing sentiment in the community about Australia Day and that 26 January is the national Australia Day public holiday. We also understand the activities we have traditionally held on that date have been challenging for some members of our community, and that participation is continuing to reduce over time.
Albury prides itself on being a diverse multicultural community with a strong connection to our First Nations heritage. As we work towards greater reconciliation with the Aboriginal community, we want to show respect in the way we undertake key events on our city’s calendar each year. Ensuring our events are appealing and attract community participation is also important to us.
26 January remains the Australia Day national public holiday, however this year we've moved the Albury Awards and the first Australian Citizenship Ceremony of the year to other days in January to allow them to shine as individual events.
