Enhancing Support for Those in Financial Hardship

We're committed to supporting our community, especially those facing financial challenges. That's why we've reviewed and updated our Debt Recovery and Financial Hardship Policy to better address the current economic conditions impacting our residents. Our proposed changes aim to ensure our policies are effective, compassionate, and aligned with the OLG Debt Management and Hardship Guidelines.

Here's a summary of the proposed updates:

1. Title and Branding: The policy title will be updated to include "Financial Hardship," and the branding will be refreshed according to AlburyCity's guidelines. Payment due dates will be clearly stated for better understanding.

2. Threshold for Debt Collection: The threshold to initiate debt collection will increase from $600 to $1,000, giving more breathing room to those with smaller debts.

3. Proactive Communication: Our debt recovery agency will make at least one phone call or email attempt before issuing a Statement of Liquidated Claim, aiming to resolve issues before escalating.

4. Hardship Considerations: We will offer support for those facing genuine financial hardship due to circumstances such as job loss, death, illness, domestic violence, serious accidents, natural disasters, or pandemics.

5. Improved Hardship Application: A more robust Hardship Rate Relief application form will be introduced, along with appropriate documentation to aid in the decision-making process.

6. Interest Management: While interest will continue to accrue, it will be written off if the agreed hardship payment plan is adhered to, providing further relief to those committed to managing their debts.

7. Access to Financial Advisors: We will establish and maintain a list of financial advisors that will be easily accessible for customers needing expert advice.

8. Comprehensive Policy Coverage: The policy will be expanded to include information previously detailed within the Debt Management Procedure, ensuring all relevant details are in one place.

These changes reflect our dedication to being supportive, clear, and proactive in our approach to debt management and financial hardship. We're here to help and make sure that those in need have access to the necessary resources and support.
